Memphis, TN – Daniel Heatherly, 39, a resident of Ripley, Tennessee, has been meted out a severe federal punishment for his role in the methamphetamine trade. Sentenced to serve 120 months in federal prison, Heatherly faces a decade behind bars after being found guilty of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm during the commission of a drug trafficking crime.
The charge came following an investigation by the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office. On February 11, 2019, a sheriff’s deputy stopped Heatherly while he was driving, aware that his license had been revoked due to a prior DUI conviction. The vehicle search uncovered a loaded handgun, meth pipe, and two clear plastic baggies filled with meth rocks, along with scales. More methamphetamine was found hidden behind the passenger seat, alongside 176 grams of marijuana.
Heatherly’s denial of knowledge over the drugs and firearm proved futile as analysis by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) confirmed the purity level of the meth to be a stunning 100%. On August 20, 2020, U.S. District Court Judge Sheryl H. Lipman handed down the sentence of 120 months in federal prison, followed by four years of supervised release.
U.S. Attorney D. Michael Dunavant emphasized the severity of Heatherly’s crime, stating, “This offender presented a double threat: a drug dealer with a loaded firearm distributing a highly addictive substance on the streets. Meth distribution + gun = a federal prison sentence that incapacitates a dangerous offender and achieves justice without parole.” The DEA and the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office worked together to investigate this case.
Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Sean Hord led the prosecution for the government, ensuring that justice was served. This tough sentence sends a clear message: those who combine drug trafficking with dangerous firearms will face serious federal consequences in Tennessee.
