MISSOULA – A Local Sex Trafficking Ring Exposed

Roam Savage Chandler, 22, of Missoula, Montana, has pleaded guilty to sex trafficking of a minor and racketeering charges in Missoula federal court. This conviction marks a significant blow to a local sex trafficking ring that has been operating under the guise of a relationship.

The 17-year-old victim, who was in a relationship with Chandler, stated that he was the one who came up with the idea to make money from her participation in commercial sex acts. She claimed that Chandler posted ads promoting commercial sex with her on the website backpage.com and that he knew she was 17 years old at the time.

Hotel and motel records, as well as records from backpage.com, substantiate the victim’s claims. Another adult female witness came forward, alleging that Chandler had similarly suggested she engage in commercial sex acts and that she had done so. Chandler promoted her online and received proceeds from her acts of prostitution.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Cyndee Peterson and investigated by the Montana Regional Violent Crime Task Force, the FBI, the Missoula Police Department, and the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office. This case sends a clear message that sex trafficking will not be tolerated in our community.

Chandler faces a mandatory prison sentence of 10 years to life in prison for the trafficking count and up to five years for the racketeering charge. His sentencing is set for May 11, 2017, in Missoula.

U.S. District Court Judge Donald W. Molloy presided over the change of plea. As the community continues to grapple with the issue of sex trafficking, it is essential that we hold perpetrators accountable for their actions and work towards creating a safer environment for all.
