Adnan Alibegic, a 28-year-old from Waterloo, Iowa, has been sentenced to over nine years in federal prison for illegal gun possession. The sentence, handed down on November 23, 2021, came after Alibegic was caught with a loaded firearm while passed out at a local gas station.
On June 22, 2021, Alibegic pleaded guilty to the charge of possession of a firearm by a felon. Authorities discovered the weapon, stolen and loaded, alongside him during an October 2020 incident. An accompanying search of his vehicle revealed methamphetamine, fentanyl, and alprazolam in a pill bottle.
Further investigation at Alibegic’s home yielded two additional firearms, all bearing his DNA. His criminal history includes a 2018 conviction for intimidation with a dangerous weapon, where he shot a gun into a crowd, narrowly missing children inside a residence. Alibegic also has a conviction for conspiracy to commit a forcible felony.
United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams sentenced Alibegic to 110 months’ imprisonment in Cedar Rapids, followed by a three-year term of supervised release and a $100 special assessment fee. Parole is not an option within the federal system.
Assistant United States Attorney Ashley Corkery prosecuted the case, which was part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice initiative aimed at reducing violent crime. PSN coordinates efforts between local law enforcement and federal agencies to target violent offenders and support reentry programs.
