Waterloo, Iowa – A local man has been handed a nine-year federal prison sentence after being caught with three firearms and illegal drugs. Adnan Alibegic, 28, pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a felon on June 22, 2021.
The nightmare began in October 2020 when police found Alibegic passed out at a local gas station. Officers discovered a loaded, stolen firearm beside him and subsequently uncovered two more firearms at his residence. His DNA was found on all three guns.
Alibegic’s criminal history includes intimidation with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit a forcible felony. In 2018, he shot a gun into a group of individuals, narrowly missing children in the process.
Sentencing took place in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams, who ordered 110 months’ imprisonment for Alibegic. He must also serve three years of supervised release and pay a $100 special assessment fee with no possibility of parole.
Assistant United States Attorney Ashley Corkery prosecuted the case, which was part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice program aimed at reducing violent crime. PSN brings together local law enforcement, federal agencies, and community partners to combat gun violence.
