Burlington Meth Dealer Hogberg Gets 12+ Years
DAVENPORT, Iowa – Jacob Robert Hogberg, 32, of Burlington, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced on Thursday, November 18, 2021, to 148 months for Possession with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine and Felon in Possession of a Firearm and Ammunition. Chief Judge John A. Jarvey of the United States District Court handed down the stiff sentence, also ordering five years of supervised release following Hogberg’s incarceration and a $200 payment to the Crime Victims’ Fund.
The bust originated in December 2019, when Burlington Police Department officers responded to a call at the Super 8 Motel. They weren’t looking for a guest enjoying a quiet night; they were hunting a drug dealer. Hogberg and two associates quickly became the focus. A search of a vehicle linked to Hogberg yielded a significant haul: 205.38 grams of methamphetamine, a loaded Mossberg 20-gauge pump shotgun, and a supply of Winchester .20 gauge shotgun shells. The scene screamed intent to deal, and Hogberg didn’t deny it.
Court documents reveal Hogberg freely admitted to possessing the methamphetamine with the explicit intention of distributing it. That alone carried a hefty penalty, but the firearm charge added serious weight. As a convicted felon, Hogberg was already legally barred from owning or possessing any firearms or ammunition. The combination of drugs and an illegal weapon painted a dangerous picture, one the court clearly took seriously.
The investigation was swift and decisive. Hogberg was indicted and, on July 14, 2021, he entered a guilty plea to both charges. There was no deal to be made, no attempt to wiggle free. Facing overwhelming evidence, Hogberg accepted responsibility – a move that ultimately did little to soften the judge’s sentence. The prosecution, led by United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa, clearly built a solid case.
This sentencing serves as a stark reminder that drug trafficking and illegal firearm possession will not be tolerated in Iowa. The Burlington Police Department’s work, combined with the federal prosecution, removed a dangerous individual from the streets and sent a clear message to others contemplating similar crimes. The 148-month sentence is a testament to the seriousness with which federal authorities view these offenses.
Beyond the prison time and supervised release, Hogberg will also be required to contribute $200 to the Crime Victims’ Fund, a small but meaningful gesture acknowledging the harm caused by his actions.
