Joshua Brown, a 49-year-old resident of Iowa City, pleaded guilty in federal court today to being a felon in possession of a firearm. According to the Department of Justice USAO for Iowa, Brown admitted to knowingly possessing a pistol on July 18, 2020, following convictions for unauthorized possession of an offensive weapon and possession of a firearm by a felon.
Brown’s previous convictions include unauthorized possession of an offensive weapon in Johnson County in 1995 and possession of a firearm by a felon in Cedar County in 1996. The hearing took place before United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams, with sentencing to be determined following the completion of a presentence report.
While free on bond pending sentencing, Brown faces a maximum sentence of ten years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release. Assistant United States Attorney Mark Tremmel is prosecuting the case, which was investigated by the Cedar Rapids Police Department, the FBI, ATF, and the Linn County Sheriff’s Office.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a DOJ initiative aimed at reducing violent crime through comprehensive community solutions. PSN focuses on the most violent offenders while partnering with local prevention and reentry programs for lasting reductions in crime.
