Defendant Sentenced to 5 Years for Drug and Gun Crimes

Deandre Tyree Harris, a 23-year-old Alexandria man, has been sentenced to five years in prison for using and carrying a firearm during and in relation to a drug trafficking crime.

According to court documents, Harris was attempting to evade arrest for an outstanding warrant on June 5, 2016, when he discarded a backpack containing a loaded firearm, distribution amounts of marijuana, and a digital scale. This was during a foot pursuit with police officers.

Harris admitted to carrying the loaded handgun while conducting drug trafficking activities and paying another person to purchase the handgun on his behalf, violating federal firearms laws. Additionally, he admitted to shooting the handgun in two residential neighborhoods in Alexandria on May 15 and May 31, 2016, prompting the Alexandria Police Department to respond to the scene.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Carina A. Cuellar. U.S. District Judge Liam O’Grady handed down the sentence.

Harris pleaded guilty on Dec. 21, 2016. The investigation was conducted by the Washington Field Division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, with assistance from the Alexandria Police Department.

This conviction serves as a reminder of the serious consequences for those involved in drug trafficking and gun crimes. We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure the safety of our communities.
