MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA – The cold-blooded killing of a neighbor has culminated in justice as Christian Scott Dunham, 22, from Poteau, Oklahoma, has been sentenced to 24 years behind bars for the brutal murder that occurred on the Choctaw Nation Reservation.
Dunham’s sentence was announced by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, following a joint investigation by the Poteau Police Department, Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The grim events unfolded early morning hours of August 20, 2022, when Dunham coldly shot his neighbor with a .22 caliber revolver. The tragic incident took place within Le Flore County, under the jurisdiction of the Eastern District of Oklahoma.
On February 13, 2023, Dunham faced the music as he pleaded guilty to Murder in Indian Country—Second Degree. Presided over by the Honorable John F. Heil, III, the hearing saw Dunham’s fate sealed with a non-paroleable sentence of 293 months in federal prison.
Assistant United States Attorney Joshua Satter represented the prosecution, ensuring that justice was served for the victim and the community. As Dunham awaits transportation to his designated United States Bureau of Prisons facility, he will remain in the custody of the U.S. Marshal.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the severe consequences faced by those who commit murder in Indian Country, underlining the commitment of federal authorities to uphold justice on sovereign land.
