A string of violent robberies rocked Connecticut in September and October 2022, with 37 gas stations, convenience stores, and liquor stores targeted across the state. Rebecca Barbera, 44, of Guilford, played a crucial role in these crimes, assisting her associate Lonny Cross in the robberies. The crimes occurred in multiple cities, including North Branford, Waterbury, and New Haven, with Cross using a knife or fake firearm to threaten employees and steal over $58,000 in cash.
Barbera’s involvement in the robberies was significant, as she would often enter the stores ahead of Cross to gather information about the number of employees and customers. She would then report back to Cross, who would use this information to carry out the robberies. In some cases, Cross grabbed victims and held a knife to them, including a 12-year-old boy who was alone behind the counter during a robbery in Wethersfield.
The investigation into the robberies led to the arrest of Cross and Barbera, with searches of Cross’s residence and vehicle uncovering evidence of the crimes. On October 14, 2022, investigators conducted court-authorized searches, which ultimately led to the conviction of Barbera. She has now been sentenced to 24 months in prison, followed by two years of supervised release.
The sentence reflects the seriousness of Barbera’s crimes and the significant role she played in assisting Cross. The case highlights the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies in bringing violent criminals to justice.
