ANCHORAGE, Alaska – A North Pole man has been charged with a string of crimes related to illegal hunting and filing fraudulent subsistence permit applications in Alaska.
Robert John Albaugh, 58, faces 32 counts of violating the Lacey Act and other federal laws, stemming from a 16-year span of submitting false Federal Subsistence Permit Applications and taking wildlife in a Federal Subsistence Area located south of Delta Junction, Alaska.
Between 2002 and 2018, Albaugh and his wife applied for and received a combined 63 Federal Subsistence Hunt permits for Game Management Unit 13, claiming to be rural residents of Delta Junction, AK. They took 23 caribou and 1 moose pursuant to those permits, despite being ineligible.
The charges are based on a 16-year investigation into Albaugh’s actions. The Federal Subsistence Management Program is designed to provide rural Alaskans with the opportunity to maintain a subsistence way of life while maintaining healthy wildlife populations.
Subsistence fishing and hunting provide a significant share of the food consumed in rural Alaska, with many residents relying on wild foods for cultural, social, and economic reasons. The charges against Albaugh are a stark reminder of the importance of upholding the law and respecting the rights of others in Alaska’s vast wilderness.
Robert Albaugh is currently awaiting his first court appearance. If convicted, he faces up to one year in federal prison and a $100,000 fine on each count. The actual sentence will be determined by the court based on the seriousness of the offense and Albaugh’s prior criminal history.
These charges are merely allegations, and Albaugh is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan D. Tansey for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Alaska. The Bureau of Land Management Office of Law Enforcement and Security conducted the investigation.
