Hoarding and Price Gouging, Pandemic Profiteering, Alaska 2020
U.S. Attorney Bryan Schroder announced a new effort to investigate and punish wrongdoing related to the COVID-19 pandemic in Alaska.
The pandemic has caused anxiety and uncertainty across the country, and Schroder vowed to root out schemes and bring criminals to justice.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office, along with law enforcement partners, will target individuals who try to take advantage of the crisis to defraud the public.
According to an Executive Order signed by the President on March 23, 2020, the Department of Justice has created a task force to address hoarding and price gouging associated with COVID-19.
The task force will develop effective enforcement measures and work closely with the Secretary of Health and Human Services to designate particular items and equipment as protected under the statute.
U.S. Attorney Schroder urges Alaskans to be vigilant in reporting any COVID-19 related hoarding or fraud activities, and warned that criminals will likely continue to use new methods to exploit the pandemic.
Those who think they are victims of a scam or attempted fraud involving COVID-19 can report it to the authorities without leaving their homes.
