Robert S. Goldman, age 60, of Palm Desert, California, has been sentenced to 27 months’ imprisonment for Wire Fraud. Senior U.S. District Court Judge Laurie Smith Camp handed down the sentence in federal court, also ordering restitution in the amount of $221,414.
The sentencing comes after an investigation conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which determined that Goldman had fraudulently obtained personal bank account information of a 90-year-old victim residing in the District of Nebraska. Between January 2016 and August 2017, Goldman made approximately 180 unauthorized wire payments from the victim’s account to his own credit card account, totaling more than $221,414.
According to investigators, Goldman used the fraudulently obtained funds to finance trips to Hawaii and Las Vegas, shopping excursions, gambling, and other personal expenses. The scope of Goldman’s fraudulent activities is a stark reminder of the dangers of financial exploitation, particularly against vulnerable populations such as the elderly.
The investigation, led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, underscores the commitment of federal law enforcement agencies to combat financial crimes and protect the public from fraudsters like Goldman. The sentence handed down by Judge Smith Camp reflects the seriousness with which the court views such offenses, and serves as a warning to those who would seek to engage in similar activities.
Goldman will begin a 3-year term of supervised release upon his release from prison. There is no parole in the federal system, ensuring that Goldman will serve out his full sentence. The restitution order, totaling $221,414, will provide some measure of compensation to the victim for the financial losses incurred as a result of Goldman’s actions.
The case against Goldman is a testament to the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the judiciary in combating financial crimes. As the federal authorities continue to crack down on such offenses, it is likely that more individuals like Goldman will face justice for their crimes. The public can take comfort in the knowledge that those who engage in fraudulent activities will be held accountable, and that the rights of victims will be protected.
In the meantime, the sentencing of Robert S. Goldman serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance and awareness when it comes to financial transactions. As the population ages, it is increasingly important for individuals to take steps to protect themselves from financial exploitation, and for law enforcement agencies to remain vigilant in their efforts to combat such crimes. By working together, we can create a safer, more secure environment for everyone.
