Failure to Register as a Sex Offender Lands Sioux Falls Man in Prison

SIOUX FALLS – A Sioux Falls man has been sentenced to federal prison for failing to register as a sex offender, a crime that has severe consequences for those who commit it.

Robert Walter White, 36, was sentenced to 12 months and a day in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release, and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100. White was convicted of failing to register as a sex offender between February 14, 2023, and April 19, 2023.

The conviction stems from White’s failure to register as a sex offender, a requirement that he must adhere to for the rest of his life following his previous federal conviction. White had previously been convicted of a sex offense in federal court, making it mandatory for him to register as a sex offender.

This case was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey C. Clapper prosecuting the case. The U.S. Marshals Service played a crucial role in uncovering White’s failure to register as a sex offender.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006. Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children, as well as identify and rescue victims.

White was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following his sentencing. This serves as a stern reminder of the consequences of failing to register as a sex offender, and the importance of adhering to this requirement.
