Richmond Man Sentenced to 20 Years for Sex Trafficking of Children
A 20-year prison sentence has been handed down to a Richmond man, Stephen T. Callis, 47, for his involvement in sex trafficking of children. The sentencing took place on March 3, 2023, in the Eastern District of Virginia.
According to a statement of facts filed with the plea agreement, Callis admitted to posing online as a 15-year-old girl in order to initiate communication with a juvenile victim. He used the alias ‘Kayla’ on KIK Messenger to discuss engaging in prostitution with older men, including ‘Mark,’ another alias used by Callis.
Callis and the juvenile then engaged in sexual conversations via KIK Messenger and arranged to meet in person. Their first meeting took place in November 2014, where Callis rented a hotel room and paid the juvenile $60 for sexual services. The two engaged in sex acts approximately seven times, with Callis paying the juvenile for those acts on five occasions.
Throughout this time, Callis and the juvenile continued to engage in sexual conversations via KIK Messenger, and the juvenile sent Callis naked pictures. Callis was aware that the juvenile was a minor and picked them up from high school several times.
Callis was sentenced to 20 years in prison, and will also serve five years of supervised release upon his release. He is required to register as a sex offender as well.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Heather L. Hart, and was announced after sentencing by U.S. District Judge John A. Gibney. The FBI’s Richmond Division, led by Special Agent in Charge Adam S. Lee, also assisted in the case.
