Former Pennsville Police Officer Pleads Guilty to Obstructing Child Pornography Investigation

A former police officer in New Jersey has pleaded guilty to obstructing a federal investigation into his alleged possession of child pornography. Robert Waterman, 31, of Wrightstown, N.J., admitted to destroying a computer hard drive to conceal evidence of the crime.

According to the Indictment, Waterman was a member of the Pennsville Police Department when he was interviewed by FBI special agents on March 4, 2010, regarding the alleged possession of child pornography. After the interview, Waterman located a hard drive in his garage and placed it in his patrol car, where he broke apart the hard drive’s green printed circuit board into small pieces to obstruct the FBI’s investigation.

The obstruction count to which Waterman pleaded guilty is punishable by a maximum potential penalty of 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000. Waterman remains released on a personal recognizance bond of $100,000.

Sentencing is scheduled for April 18, 2013. Waterman’s defense counsel is Maggie Moy, Esq., Assistant Federal Public Defender, Camden.

Waterman’s guilty plea is the result of a joint investigation by the FBI and the Salem County Prosecutor’s Office, with assistance from the Pennsville Police Department.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Matthew J. Skahill and Amy Luria of the U.S. Attorney’s Office Special Prosecutions Division.
