Broken Arrow Resident Found Guilty of Assault in Indian Country
Broken Arrow, Oklahoma – In a shocking turn of events, Robert Wayne Thompson, a 54-year-old Broken Arrow resident, has been found guilty of the lesser included offense of Assault by Striking, Beating, or Wounding in Indian Country.
The verdict, delivered on Wednesday, September 1, 2021, was the result of a federal jury trial that began on Tuesday, August 31, 2021. The trial was a culmination of a thorough investigation by the Broken Arrow Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
According to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, the defendant assaulted an individual by picking up a bar stool and striking the victim on the head, causing a head laceration. This heinous act occurred in Wagoner County, within the boundaries of the Muscogee (Creek) Reservation, and within the Eastern District of Oklahoma.
Thompson, a member of a federally-recognized Indian tribe, was indicted by a federal grand jury last February with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon with Intent to do Bodily Harm in Indian Country. However, the jury found him guilty of the lesser included offense of Assault by Striking, Beating, or Wounding in Indian Country.
Thompson is facing up to 1 year of imprisonment. The Honorable Ronald A. White, U.S. District Judge in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma in Muskogee, presided over the trial and ordered the completion of a presentence report. Sentencing will be scheduled following completion of the report. Thompson was remanded to the custody of the United States Marshal pending the imposition of sentencing.
Assistant United States Attorneys Benjamin Traster and Rob Wallace represented the United States in the case.
