MACON, Georgia – In a move to increase community policing, the U.S. government has awarded a $95,783 Hiring Grant to the Roberta Police Department.
According to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the grant was awarded as part of the 2013 Community Oriented Policing Hiring Program, which provides funding for law enforcement agencies to hire or rehire community policing officers.
The grant will provide the salary and benefits for three years, allowing the Roberta Police Department to hire or rehire officers and enhance community policing efforts in the area.
Roberta Police Department was the only agency in the Middle District to be awarded a grant and one of only two in the entire state, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
The COPS Office, a federal agency responsible for advancing community policing nationwide, has awarded over $14 billion in grants since 1995, including funding for more than 13,000 state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies.
“When we put more police officers on the street, everybody wins,” said U.S. Attorney Michael J. Moore. “These grants help both rural communities with limited resources and metropolitan areas with high crime problems. Community oriented policing is one way we can be proactive when it comes to law enforcement.”
