Heroin Dealer Sentenced to Prison in New Haven
ROBERTO TORRES, also known as ‘Tony,’ a 49-year-old New Haven resident, has been sentenced to 24 months of imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release, for distributing heroin in the city’s Fair Haven neighborhood.
U.S. Attorney Deirdre M. Daly announced the sentence, which was handed down by U.S. District Judge Victor A. Bolden in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
The investigation into Torres’ heroin trafficking operation was a joint effort between the DEA New Haven Task Force, the FBI, and the New Haven Police Department. The investigation included the use of court-authorized wiretaps, physical surveillance, and controlled purchases of heroin from wholesale and street-level distributors in the area of Ferry Street, Grand Avenue, and Blatchley Avenue in New Haven’s Fair Haven neighborhood.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, Torres was charged in July 2015, along with 16 other New Haven residents, with heroin trafficking offenses. The investigation led to the seizure of approximately 500 grams of raw heroin, three handguns, and five vehicles. In addition, bank accounts containing more than $300,000 have been frozen.
As part of the investigation, law enforcement has been working to dismantle a large-scale heroin trafficking operation in the Fair Haven neighborhood. Torres has been detained since his arrest on July 15, 2015. On February 24, 2016, he pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute heroin.
The DEA New Haven Task Force includes participants from the New Haven, Hamden, West Haven, North Haven, East Haven, Branford, Ansonia, Meriden, and Derby Police Departments, as well as the U.S. Marshals Service. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney H. Gordon Hall.
With this sentence, law enforcement continues to make progress in combating heroin trafficking in the New Haven area. The U.S. Attorney’s office commends the DEA New Haven Task Force and other law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation for their tireless efforts to keep the community safe.
