Jeffrey M. Patton, Heroin Possession with Intent to Distribute, New York 2016

ROCHESTER, NY – Another lowlife dealing poison on the streets of Rochester is off the grid. Jeffrey M. Patton, 27, was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison today after being convicted of possession with intent to distribute heroin. The sentence was handed down by Chief U.S. District Judge Frank P. Geraci, Jr., a small victory in a city drowning in narcotics.

The bust went down on February 21, 2016, at a residence located at 1205 Jay Street. Parole officers with the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision weren’t looking for Patton; they were hunting a parole absconder. They stumbled upon something far more damaging. Inside the apartment, officers spotted a firearm brazenly displayed on a bedroom dresser. But the real score was Patton himself, found with a quantity of heroin on his person.

Rochester Police Department officers quickly arrived on scene and, after securing a search warrant, turned the apartment inside out. The search yielded additional contraband, solidifying the case against Patton as a distributor – a dealer profiting from the misery of others. Assistant U.S. Attorney Douglas E. Gregory, the prosecutor on the case, built a solid case that held up in court.

This wasn’t a simple possession charge. Patton wasn’t just a user; he was moving weight, peddling addiction. The presence of the firearm only adds to the danger he posed to the community. It’s a grim reminder that the heroin trade and gun violence often go hand-in-hand.

Acting U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy, Jr. made the announcement, highlighting the collaborative effort that brought Patton down. The investigation was a joint operation between the Rochester Police Department, led by Chief Michael Ciminelli; the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, under Acting Commissioner Anthony J. Annucci; and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), with Special Agent-in-Charge Ashan Benedict overseeing the New York Field Division.

Eighteen months is a start, but it’s a drop in the bucket in the ongoing war against drugs. While Patton sits behind bars, others will undoubtedly attempt to fill the void, preying on the vulnerable. The Grimy Times will continue to track these cases and expose the individuals profiting from the destruction of our communities. Contact Barbara Burns at (716) 843-5817 for further information.
