A former United States Postal Service employee has been sentenced to five years of probation after stealing over $128,000 worth of jewels and valuables from the mail, according to a recent investigation.

Jeremy Lieberman, 35, of Rochester, N.Y., pleaded guilty to stealing diamonds and other precious items from the mails between January 2013 and May 2013.

Assistant U.S. Attorney John J. Field revealed that Lieberman, while working as a mail handler, had an addiction to prescription opiates that he was financing by selling the stolen goods at local pawn shops.

The investigation, led by the U.S. Postal Service, Office of Inspector General, Eastern Area Field Office, found that Lieberman stole more than $128,000 worth of jewels and valuables during the six-month period.

Lieberman’s sentencing includes 10 months of confinement at a community confinement center as part of his five-year probation.

Special Agent in Charge Monica Weyler commended the U.S. Postal Service and its investigators for their work in bringing the case to a close.

U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr. announced Lieberman’s sentencing, stating that the case serves as a reminder of the importance of trust and integrity in the public service sector.
