ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A grim day in Rochester’s legal history saw Michael Oliver, 26, of the city, enter a guilty plea to possession with intent to distribute cocaine and carrying a firearm during a drug trafficking crime. The charges, brought by Acting U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy, Jr., carry severe penalties, including life imprisonment.
The crime spree began when a Rochester Police Department officer noticed an occupied 2014 Ford Focus that nearly struck a cyclist while turning. With the car reported stolen, the officer approached and discovered burnt marijuana. A closer inspection led to a loaded handgun and 13 bags of cocaine, marking Oliver’s downfall.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles E. Moynihan detailed the events of September 18, 2016, emphasizing the defendant’s role in the drug trade. The plea is the culmination of a joint investigation by the Rochester PD and the ATF, under Chiefs Ciminelli and Special Agent-in-Charge Benedict.
Oliver now awaits sentencing on July 11, 2017, facing up to life in prison, a $1,000,000 fine, or both. The case serves as a stark reminder of the city’s battle against drug trafficking and violent crime.
