ROCK HILL GUNMAN SENTENCED FOR 5 SHOT DRIVE-BY
COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA – A Rock Hill man was sentenced to a long stretch in federal prison for a brazen drive-by shooting that left a motorist’s car riddled with five bullet holes.
Sharif Ahmad Laguda, 32, of Rock Hill, pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, and was slapped with a 57-month sentence by United States District Judge Mary Geiger Lewis.
Laguda’s run-in with the law began on July 31, 2022, when he got into a traffic incident with another motorist. The evidence presented in court showed that Laguda retrieved a 9mm pistol from his car and fired at the other driver’s car, striking it five times.
But Laguda’s actions were not just reckless – they were also illegal. He was prohibited from possessing a firearm and ammunition due to a 2010 conviction for two counts of assault and battery with intent to kill.
The investigation into Laguda’s crime was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Rock Hill Police Department (RHPD). Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher D. Taylor is prosecuting the case.
As part of a broader strategy to reduce violent crime, this case was prosecuted as part of the joint federal, state, and local Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program. PSN is an evidence-based program proven to be effective at reducing violent crime.
Laguda’s sentence is a stark reminder that possessing a firearm as a convicted felon will not be tolerated. The 57-month sentence will be followed by a three-year term of court-ordered supervision, with no parole available in the federal system.
