Rockwell Gajwani, chief executive officer of a Manhattan real estate company, has been arrested and charged with embezzling more than $1 million and tax evasion.
According to the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Preet Bharara, Gajwani abused his position of authority to embezzle over a million dollars of company money from October 2011 through March 2013.
The scheme allegedly involved Gajwani making wire transfers from the company’s bank account to his personal bank account, writing company checks to himself, and making cash withdrawals from the company’s bank account.
To conceal his actions, Gajwani took steps to conceal his true salary and to conceal from the company’s parent company the amount of money he had taken from the company’s bank account.
Gajwani was arrested this morning by USPIS and IRS agents in Connecticut and presented this afternoon in Manhattan federal court before U.S. Magistrate Judge Frank Maas.
The exact charges against Gajwani include wire fraud, money laundering, and tax evasion.
Gajwani’s case is a reminder that everyone is responsible for paying their fair share of taxes, whether their income is legal or illegal, as stated by IRS-CI Special Agent in Charge Shantelle P. Kitchen.
Gajwani’s arrest and charges bring an end to a scheme that has been ongoing for several years.
