WASHINGTON D.C. – Rodney Baggott, 58, will spend the rest of his life behind bars after a D.C. jury convicted him of the brazen murder of Uber Eats driver Rasheek Abdullah. The shooting, triggered by a minor traffic dispute near Dupont Circle on January 30th, was swift and fatal. Baggott, a repeat offender, opened fire on Abdullah after being passed by his vehicle, a bullet severing Abdullah’s life.
Prosecutors presented evidence showing Baggott’s calculated rage. Witnesses testified he immediately drew a firearm from his white Mitsubishi Outlander and shot Abdullah in the neck. The jury saw through any attempts at justification, delivering a first-degree murder conviction after a mere day of deliberation, along with multiple firearms charges.
Baggott’s attempt to cover up the crime quickly unraveled. His girlfriend, present in the vehicle, immediately began canvassing body shops for repairs to the Outlander – damage quickly linked to the shooting by police. The search for repairs became a crucial piece of evidence solidifying the case against Baggott.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro stated the sentence was about more than one death. “This man is a career criminal with no regard for human life,” she said. The life sentence removes a dangerous predator from the streets of D.C., ensuring he won’t inflict further harm.
