A Mexican national with deep ties to Canton’s underground drug scene has been hit with federal charges after a multi-agency investigation uncovered a pattern of cocaine distribution and illegal border re-entry. Rodolfo Trejo, aka Rudy, 38, was indicted on five counts, including multiple cocaine-related charges and unlawful presence in the U.S. following deportation.
The federal grand jury indictment, announced by U.S. Attorney Carole S. Rendon for the Northern District of Ohio, alleges Trejo distributed cocaine on three separate dates in 2016—August 17, September 7, and September 22. Each count charges him with distribution of a controlled substance, painting a picture of sustained involvement in the city’s illicit drug trade.
In addition to the distribution counts, Count 4 accuses Trejo of possessing cocaine with intent to distribute on or about December 1, 2016. Law enforcement sources indicate the quantities involved suggest operation beyond casual use, pointing toward a supply chain feeding local addiction and street-level sales.
The fifth and final charge strikes at immigration violations: Trejo, a citizen of Mexico, was previously deported in 2013 but was found back in the United States illegally. Authorities stress that his return and immediate plunge into drug activity exemplify the national security risks posed by illegal re-entry by deported felons.
The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the Canton Police Department. The coordination underscores the growing fusion of local and federal forces in tackling drug networks embedded in Midwestern cities.
Trejo now faces prosecution by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason M. Katz. While an indictment is not a conviction, conviction on all counts could bring severe penalties. As mandated by federal sentencing guidelines, the court will weigh Trejo’s criminal history, role in the offenses, and the nature of the violations—though any sentence cannot exceed statutory maximums. The case remains pending.
