Youngstown’s Damari Rodriguez, also known as ‘Dee Dee’, faced the music for a high-stakes identity theft scheme that spanned over three years. The 29-year-old was sentenced in federal court to time served – exactly 366 days in federal custody – and is now facing three years of supervised release.
The judge, Nora Barry Fischer, also ordered Rodriguez to pay restitution for the staggering fraud loss of $17,808.00. Rodriguez’s operation began in May 2014 and reached its peak in February 2017, where he swapped counterfeit checks at East Coast casinos using fake IDs with real names.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregory C. Melucci handled the prosecution for the government, bringing to justice a man who exploited personal information for financial gain. The U.S. Attorney Scott W. Brady commended Homeland Security Investigations and the Pennsylvania State Police for their relentless pursuit of Rodriguez and their role in dismantling his criminal enterprise.
Despite serving his time, Rodriguez is now under strict supervision, expected to adhere to strict guidelines during his supervised release period. His sentence serves as a stark reminder of the serious consequences faced by those who engage in identity theft on a grand scale.
This case underscores the ongoing battle against cybercrime and financial fraud, highlighting the importance of cooperation between federal agencies and state law enforcement in protecting citizens from such criminal activities.
