Rosa Elia Amaya, Smuggling, Texas 2024

Rosa Elia Amaya, a 27-year-old resident of Laredo, has admitted to smuggling a minor across the US border in exchange for $1,500. The shocking case came to light when Amaya attempted to enter the country from Mexico at the Lincoln Juarez Port of Entry on July 13, accompanied by a minor male and her U.S. citizen daughter.

Amaya claimed to be the boy’s mother and presented authorities with a birth certificate as proof of citizenship. However, upon questioning, the minor boy remained silent when asked for the location of his mother, prompting an investigation that confirmed the unaccompanied minor was not Amaya’s son.

According to prosecutors, Amaya had agreed to smuggle the minor into the U.S. in return for a hefty sum of $1,500. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations conducted the investigation with assistance from Customs and Border Protection.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron Petters is prosecuting the case, which has left many in the community stunned. The case highlights the ongoing issue of human trafficking and the need for stricter border control measures.

U.S. District Judge Marina Garcia Marmolejo will impose a sentencing at a later date, at which time Amaya faces up to 10 years in federal prison and a possible $250,000 maximum fine. She was permitted to remain on bond pending that hearing.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of human trafficking and the importance of keeping our borders secure. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.

The investigation and prosecution of human trafficking cases are crucial in bringing those responsible to justice and protecting vulnerable individuals from exploitation.
