ALBANY, NEW YORK – A 50-year-old Haitian woman has been sentenced to time served for a serious crime that could have landed her a much longer prison sentence.
Rose Mathe Jean Louis, a 50-year-old Haitian woman, was sentenced to time served – 61 days in jail – for illegal re-entry into the United States.
The announcement was made by United States Attorney Grant C. Jaquith and Robert N. Garcia, Chief Patrol Agent, United States Border Patrol, Swanton Sector.
According to court documents, Jean Louis was ordered removed from the United States to Haiti by an Immigration Judge in Orlando, Florida, on February 10, 2014. However, Jean Louis was not removed and instead was released to reside in the United States.
On August 21, 2017, Jean Louis departed the United States while the removal order was pending, and entered Canada. She was later arrested by a Border Patrol Agent on October 18, 2018, after she entered the United States without inspection approximately three miles west of the Champlain Port of Entry, New York.
Jean Louis admitted that she returned to the United States without permission. Following the sentencing, Jean Louis was remanded to the custody of the Department of Homeland Security, for removal proceedings.
This case was investigated by Border Patrol and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Edward P. Grogan.
