Roam L. Beer, Molotov Possession, Pennsylvania 2024

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Roam L. Beer, 51, of Rossiter, Pennsylvania, learned his fate this week after a federal jury found him guilty of one count of unlawful possession of a destructive device. The conviction stems from a brazen act of domestic violence that could have easily turned deadly.

According to evidence presented during the day and a half trial before Senior United States District Judge Nora Barry Fischer, Beer hurled an ignited, homemade explosive – rigged with steel shot for maximum damage – at the side of his estranged wife’s residence on January 5, 2024. The device detonated alarmingly close to where the woman was inside the home. Miraculously, she escaped injury, but the intent was clear: to terrorize and potentially harm.

Acting United States Attorney Troy Rivetti didn’t mince words, announcing the guilty verdict and highlighting the seriousness of the crime. The prosecution, led by Assistant United States Attorney Shaun E. Sweeney, successfully demonstrated Beer’s deliberate and dangerous actions. The device wasn’t some accidental mishap; it was a weaponized attack, meticulously crafted and intentionally deployed.

The investigation, a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the New Kensington Police Department, pieced together the evidence and brought Beer to justice. Investigators painstakingly examined the remnants of the explosive, confirming its homemade construction and the addition of steel shot, designed to amplify the impact and potential for injury.

Judge Fischer has scheduled sentencing for November 18, 2025. Beer now faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a hefty fine of $250,000, or a combination of both. The final sentence will be determined based on the severity of the offense and Beer’s prior criminal history, if any. For now, the judge has ordered Beer to remain in custody pending sentencing, a fitting holding pattern for a man who attempted to turn his home into a warzone.

This case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal program aiming to reduce violent crime through collaborative law enforcement and community engagement. The Department’s renewed focus on PSN emphasizes building trust within communities, supporting preventative organizations, and strategically prioritizing enforcement – a much-needed approach in a country grappling with escalating violence. This conviction serves as a stark reminder that those who resort to explosive violence will be held accountable.
