Rot Van Nguyen, Failing to Register as a Sex Offender, Louisiana 2021

NEW ORLEANS – Rot Van Nguyen, a 59-year-old man from San Jose, California, has been sentenced to 33 months in prison for failing to register as a sex offender.

According to court documents, Nguyen was convicted in California in 2009 of a sex offense that required him to register as a sex offender for life. Despite this requirement, Nguyen failed to register as a sex offender under the federal Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA).

The U.S. Attorney’s Office announced the sentence on October 28, 2021, after a federal judge in New Orleans found Nguyen guilty of failing to register as a sex offender. Nguyen was sentenced by Judge Barry Ashe to 33 months in prison, in addition to five years of supervised release and a $100 mandatory special assessment fee.

U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans praised the work of the United States Marshals Service, which assisted in the prosecution of Nguyen.

Rot Van Nguyen, whose exact crime date was not provided, was convicted of failing to register as a sex offender. His crime required him to register as a sex offender for life. In addition to being sentenced to 33 months in prison, Nguyen was also sentenced to five years of supervised release and a $100 mandatory special assessment fee.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Spiro G. Latsis.
