Caribou Maine Officials Settle Sex Discrimination Lawsuit

The city of Caribou Maine has agreed to settle a federal lawsuit alleging sex discrimination against a female employee.

The lawsuit, filed by the US government, alleged that the city discriminated against the employee based on her sex, in violation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

According to the complaint, the city’s former Fire Chief, Roy Woods, regularly subjected the employee to sexual harassment in the workplace, including unwanted touching and comments. The harassment culminated in Woods sexually assaulting the 18-year-old employee in 2011.

The city failed to take reasonable steps to prevent Woods’ unlawful acts, despite knowing about his history of sexually harassing women in the workplace.

Under the terms of the settlement, the city will revise its sexual harassment policies, provide training to employees on the prevention of sexual harassment, and pay the victim $85,000.

The settlement was announced by Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Vanita Gupta of the Civil Rights Division.

The United States is represented in this case by Civil Rights Division attorney Allan Townsend.

The enforcement of Title VII is a priority of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.
