A devastating case of heroin distribution has resulted in a 43-year-old New London man being sentenced to 34 months in prison. RUDY HERNANDEZ was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Michael P. Shea in Hartford, marking a significant blow to the ongoing struggle against heroin dealers in the state.
According to court documents and statements made in court, the investigation began on April 12, 2016, when Groton Town Police responded to a report of a medical emergency involving a 25-year-old male who had used heroin. The victim was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased, sparking an investigation that would eventually lead to HERNANDEZ.
The probe, which included witness interviews and the review of cellphone records and text messages, revealed that the victim had arranged to purchase heroin from an individual who then acquired the heroin from HERNANDEZ and sold it to the victim. This complex web of transactions ultimately led to the tragic overdose, highlighting the dangers of heroin distribution in the community.
On April 14, 2016, New London Police and other law enforcement conducted a search of HERNANDEZ’s residence, seizing heroin, cocaine, and multiple cellular telephones. This significant bust marked a crucial turning point in the investigation, providing authorities with the evidence needed to bring HERNANDEZ to justice.
HERNANDEZ has been detained since his arrest on April 20, 2016. On July 6, 2016, he pleaded guilty to one count of distribution of heroin, acknowledging his role in the tragic events that unfolded. The case has been investigated by the DEA’s New Haven Tactical Diversion Squad and the Town of Groton Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Douglas P. Morabito prosecuting the case.
The sentence of 34 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of heroin distribution. As Deirdre M. Daly, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, continues to lead the charge against narcotics dealers, the community can take comfort in knowing that those responsible for spreading this deadly substance will be held accountable.
This case is part of an ongoing statewide initiative targeting narcotics dealers who distribute heroin, fentanyl, or opioids that cause death or serious injury to users. The initiative is a testament to the commitment of law enforcement agencies to combat the scourge of heroin distribution and ensure that those responsible face justice. As the people of New London and beyond continue to grapple with the devastating effects of heroin, they can take heart in knowing that authorities are working tirelessly to bring perpetrators to justice.
