ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The grim streets of Ruidoso were rocked yesterday as Christopher Bryant, a 46-year-old police detective, faced federal charges for the sinister crime of distributing child pornography.
The case came to light when the FBI and the Ruidoso Police Department uncovered a trail of digital misdeeds. Between Aug. 13 and Aug. 17, in Lincoln County, New Mexico, Bryant is alleged to have discovered graphic images online, capturing screenshots of three children engaged in sexually explicit conduct.
With an officer’s badge and a detective’s expertise, Bryant took the despicable step of sending these images to himself via email, shattering the trust placed in him by the community he vowed to protect.
Bryant has been taken into custody and is set to reappear in federal court on Tuesday, Sept. 1, for preliminary and detention hearings. As a reminder, all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
The investigation was a joint effort by the FBI and the Ruidoso Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Matilda McCarthy Villalobos and Dustin Segovia leading the prosecution.
Christopher Bryant’s fall from grace serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that lurk within the ranks of public service and the vital role law enforcement plays in upholding justice.
