Former Corrections Officer Sentenced for Marijuana Trafficking
ALBANY, NEW YORK – In a shocking betrayal of public trust, former Corrections Officer Brad Rushford, 35, of Ellenburg Depot, New York, has been sentenced to one year and one day in prison for his role in attempting to distribute 120 pounds of marijuana.
According to court documents, Rushford coordinated the delivery of the massive load of marijuana in March 2011. He provided a driver and scout cellphones to use in delivering the marijuana, but the illicit cargo was intercepted by law enforcement in Malone, New York.
At the time of his crime, Rushford was employed as a Corrections Officer with the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. His actions demonstrate a brazen disregard for the law and the trust placed in him by the public.
Rushford’s guilty plea admitted to his involvement in the marijuana trafficking scheme. United States District Judge David N. Hurd also sentenced him to a 4-year term of supervised release and to pay a $6,000 fine.
The investigation into Rushford’s crimes was a collaborative effort between multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations; Federal Bureau of Investigation; U.S. Customs and Border Protection; U.S. Coast Guard Investigative Service; New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, Office of Special Investigations; New York State Police; and the St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Cyrus P.W. Rieck prosecuted the case against Rushford, bringing him to justice for his crimes.
Rushford’s sentencing serves as a reminder that law enforcement will not tolerate corruption and that those who break the law will be held accountable. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and bring you updates as more information becomes available.
