Peoria Man Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison for Methamphetamine Possession
Russell N. Clemens, a 42-year-old Peoria man, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for possession with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Clemens was found guilty of the crime in December 2021 and has been in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service since then.
On July 21, 2022, U.S. District Court Judge James Shadid sentenced Clemens to 10 years in the Bureau of Prisons, followed by 5 years of supervised release. The statutory penalties for possession with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine are 10 years to life of imprisonment, followed by 5 years to life of supervised release, and up to $10 million in fines may also be imposed.
The investigation into Clemens’ activities began in May 2020, when the Peoria Police Department and the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) obtained a search warrant for Clemens’ car and apartment. During the search, officers found a total of 548.8 grams of 97% pure methamphetamine, more than $5,000 in cash, and a drug ledger. The master bedroom of the apartment contained drug ledgers and a digital scale.
Clemens admitted to selling methamphetamine since May 2020 and that he was buying pound amounts of methamphetamine. He was indicted in May 2021 and entered a plea of guilty in December 2021. The Peoria Police Department and the DEA investigated the case with assistance from the Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Keith Hollingshead-Cook represented the government in the prosecution.
The case is part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) National Methamphetamine Strategic Initiative, spearheaded locally by the DEA. The primary goal of this initiative is to address methamphetamine trafficking and its attendant consequences by using a coordinated, multi-agency approach targeting the highest levels of drug trafficking leadership.
