Tomas Ianchauskas, Lying to FBI, New York 2022

Tomas Ianchauskas, a 39-year-old U.S. green card holder who resides in Russia, has pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his involvement with a sanctioned Russian organization.

Ianchauskas, a regional leader of the Tsargrad Society, a group controlled by sanctioned oligarch Konstantin Malofeyev, falsely claimed to FBI agents in January 2022 that he had no involvement with the Society or its predecessor, the Double Headed Eagle Society, for the past three years.

U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said that Ianchauskas served as the head of the Penza Regional Branch of DHES, which was renamed the Society in November 2020, and that he lied about his leadership role and involvement with the group.

The Tsargrad Society was designated by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) in April 2022 for being owned or controlled by Malofeyev, who has been accused of promoting separatism in Crimea and providing financial support to the Donetsk People’s Republic.

According to court documents, Ianchauskas lied to the FBI on two separate occasions, and his guilty plea is a result of an investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York and the FBI.

Ianchauskas is scheduled to be sentenced on July 11, 2024, and faces up to three years in prison for his crimes.

The case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to hold accountable individuals who seek to undermine U.S. sanctions and support Russian aggression.

Ianchauskas’s guilty plea is a significant development in the ongoing investigation into Russian organizations and individuals who have been sanctioned by the U.S. government.
