Ryan Cook, Possession of Unregistered Firearm, New Mexico 2020

A disturbing case of homemade explosives has come to light in the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Ryan Cook, 45, of Albuquerque, was sentenced in federal court on September 28 to 18 months in prison for possession of an unregistered firearm. Cook pleaded guilty on October 28, 2020.

According to court records, Cook’s troubles began on June 24, 2020, when law enforcement received a call from Cook’s roommate about an explosive device in Cook’s possession at their shared residence in Los Lunas, New Mexico. After a tense standoff with the local SWAT team, Cook surrendered and was arrested. Law enforcement located and secured the destructive device.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated this case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Samuel Hurtado prosecuting the case.
