Cedar Rapids Man Sentenced to Prison for Possessing Gun as a Felon

A shocking crime has shaken the city of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Ryan Thomas Beattie, a 31-year-old local resident, has been sentenced to two years in prison for possessing a firearm as a felon.

In December 2022, Beattie was arrested after an incident where he assaulted a woman and a young child. During the arrest, officers located two loaded firearms near the scene of the crime. Beattie admitted that the firearms were his and that his girlfriend had bought them for him since he was a convicted felon.

Beattie’s girlfriend had purchased four firearms in total, with only two being recovered with Beattie. The third firearm was recovered during an incident in Iowa City, while the fourth firearm remains unrecovered.

Beattie’s lengthy criminal history includes a previous conviction for child endangerment resulting in bodily injury. At the time of the December incident, he was a convicted felon.

On April 9, 2024, Chief United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams sentenced Beattie to 24 months’ imprisonment. He will also serve a three-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Ashley Corkery and investigated by the Cedar Rapids Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
