Tohatchi Man Pleads Guilty to Kidnapping and Abuse

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A heinous crime shook the community in Gallup, New Mexico, on November 15, 2017, when Ryan Thompson, 32, kidnapped a woman and child from a local gas station. The 32-year-old defendant, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, brutally assaulted and sexually abused the woman in front of the child.

Thompson, who was driving the woman and child to another location, forced the woman to drink alcohol, according to court documents. When he momentarily left the area, the woman attempted to escape by driving away, but Thompson stopped her, pulled her out of the car, and battered her.

The defendant’s cruel actions did not end there. Thompson sexually abused the woman in front of the child and threatened to kill both of them. He held them captive in his car overnight before taking them to a home where they stayed for another night. On November 17, 2017, Thompson committed another heinous crime by stealing property from another residence.

The woman, fearing for her life, managed to escape with the child and drove away. She soon encountered police, and emergency responders took her to the hospital for treatment of her injuries, including a broken nose.

At sentencing, Ryan Thompson faces a prison term of 15 to 20 years for his heinous crimes. The Gallup Resident Agency of the FBI, with assistance from the Navajo Nation Police Department, investigated this case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Spindle is prosecuting the case.
