OAKLAND – Craig Curtis Freeman, 35, of Sacramento, received a 24-month prison sentence for breaking into a U.S. Postal Service mail truck and stealing over 700 pieces of mail, according to United States Attorney Ismail J. Ramsey and U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) Inspector in Charge Rafael Nuñez.
Freeman pleaded guilty on the same day as his sentencing, May 29, 2024. The court heard that on December 30, 2022, a mail carrier observed Freeman and a co-defendant taking mail from the truck and fleeing. Freeman confessed to driving a stolen car, breaking into the mail truck, removing over 700 pieces of mail, and escaping with his accomplice.
The duo’s getaway involved a high-speed chase and a crash before Freeman was apprehended while his co-defendant was quickly caught after attempting to flee on foot.
Freeman was indicted on March 28, 2023, for breaking and entering into a carrier facility and possession of stolen mail. The case is part of a federal response to rising crimes against postal workers, highlighted in a press conference on October 10, 2023, where Postal Inspector in Charge Nuñez emphasized the consequences of targeting postal workers.
Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Cynthia Johnson prosecuted the case with Beth Margen’s assistance, following an investigation by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, and Oakland Police Department.
