CHARLESTON, W.Va. – A Detroit-based drug dealer has been handed a six and a half year federal prison sentence for his role in a significant heroin smuggling operation.
Jason Matthew Brown, 35, of Detroit, was sentenced by United States Attorney Carol Casto after pleading guilty to possession with intent to distribute heroin. Brown’s crime spree reached its climax on January 24, 2015, when he and a codefendant were intercepted en route from Detroit to Charleston, W.Va.
During the stop, law enforcement uncovered approximately 100 grams of heroin, meticulously hidden in a spare tire in the trunk of their vehicle. Brown confessed that this was just one part of his operation, as he had transported up to 1,000 grams of the drug for distribution in Kanawha County’s Rand area.
The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department, the Metropolitan Drug Enforcement Network Team, and the West Virginia State Police collaborated on the investigation that led to Brown’s conviction. Assistant United States Attorney John J. Frail was responsible for the prosecution, while United States District Judge Thomas E. Johnston imposed the stiff sentence.
This case is a testament to the ongoing efforts of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia in their battle against prescription drug and heroin misuse. The office, alongside federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, remains committed to combating illegal pill trafficking, dismantling open-air drug markets, and curbing the spread of opiates throughout the district.
