Thomas Lee Nelson, Heroin Trafficking with Handgun, West Virginia 2023

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Thomas Lee Nelson, 48, of Detroit, is headed to federal prison for five years after admitting he armed himself while pushing heroin on the streets of Huntington. The sentence was handed down today by Chief United States District Judge Robert C. Chambers, capping a case built by the Huntington FBI Drug Task Force.

Nelson previously pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking – a charge that carries significant weight in a district battling a relentless opioid crisis. The bust went down on March 10, 2016, when agents raided Nelson’s residence at 1830 10th Avenue. It wasn’t just drugs they found.

Inside Nelson’s bedroom, agents seized a loaded Cobray Model DD .410/.45 caliber handgun. Alongside the weapon, they discovered heroin. Nelson didn’t bother denying the connection; he confessed to carrying the handgun for protection – both of himself and his stash. A clear signal of intent in a world where drug deals often turn violent.

Assistant United States Attorney R. Gregory McVey spearheaded the prosecution, bringing the case under the umbrella of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a national initiative aimed at slashing gun violence by bolstering local anti-crime programs. This wasn’t an isolated incident, officials emphasized.

The Nelson case is part of a larger, ongoing offensive by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia to dismantle the flow of illegal prescription drugs and heroin. The U.S. Attorney’s Office, working with a coalition of federal, state, and local agencies, is laser-focused on shutting down pill mills, eradicating open-air drug markets, and stemming the tide of opioid abuse that’s gripping communities across the district.

The sentencing of Nelson sends a message: bringing guns to a drug deal will land you in federal prison. The Southern District of West Virginia isn’t backing down in its fight against the forces fueling the opioid epidemic and the violence that comes with it.
