Huntington, W.Va. – Kendall Lamar Spears, 35, of Detroit, Michigan, has been locked away for 51 months in federal prison following a jury conviction for possession with intent to distribute oxymorphone. The U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin announced the sentence this week.
In October 2012, Spears tricked a Huntington couple into driving him to Detroit under false pretenses. Upon returning from Detroit with several bags of detergent and other items, authorities uncovered 302 oxymorphone pills hidden in one of the bags.
The female driver expressed concern over Spears’ activities, leading to an alert among police. The van carrying Spears was stopped and searched upon its return to Huntington, where the drugs were found.
Spears faced a two-day jury trial and sentencing hearing under Chief United States District Judge Robert C. Chambers. Although the couple claimed ignorance about the contents of the package they transported, the evidence against Spears was overwhelming.
The case underscores the persistent battle against drug trafficking in West Virginia, where authorities continue to crack down on those who bring dangerous substances into the state.
