Sacramento man Jason Raysean Broadbent, 38, has entered a guilty plea in connection with an intense confrontation involving federal agents. The incident occurred on November 19, 2015, when Broadbent opened fire at federal officers executing a search warrant at his girlfriend’s residence. Narrowly missing the agents, Broadbent fled and was ultimately shot by an ATF agent. He is now facing life in prison.
Broadbent was charged with assaulting federal officers with a deadly weapon, possession of methamphetamine near a school, being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of an unregistered destructive device, and possession of an unregistered short-barreled machine gun. Law enforcement discovered nearly two pounds of methamphetamine at the scene of the shooting, along with other firearms and explosives.
Broadbent’s criminal history includes multiple prior felony convictions, which made him prohibited from possessing firearms. A separate search warrant at his residence yielded 2.5 pounds of methamphetamine, more firearms, and ghost guns. The investigation leading to these charges was a collaborative effort involving numerous law enforcement agencies.
The Assistant U.S. Attorneys David Spencer, Justin Lee, and Nicole Vanek are handling the prosecution of this case, which is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. Broadbent’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for October 23, 2025, where he faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment and a $20 million fine.
The actual sentence will be determined by the court after considering all relevant factors and federal sentencing guidelines. This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by illegal firearms and drug trafficking in our communities.
