Gerardo Alberto Perez-Fuentes, a 22-year-old Salvadoran national, is headed to federal prison for illegally sneaking back into the United States after being deported—twice. The conviction marks another enforcement strike in the federal crackdown on repeat immigration violators caught on American soil.
Perez-Fuentes was sentenced today in U.S. District Court in Boston by Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton to six months behind bars, followed by one year of supervised release. Upon completing his sentence, federal immigration authorities will move to deport him again, adding to a growing record of failed attempts to remain in the country illegally.
The defendant was previously removed from the U.S. on two separate occasions—Sept. 4, 2015, and again on Oct. 8, 2015. Despite those clear legal orders, Perez-Fuentes reentered the country and was found in Chelsea, Massachusetts, on Sept. 6, 2017, during a law enforcement encounter that exposed his undocumented status.
In December 2017, Perez-Fuentes pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful reentry of a deported alien, a federal felony that carries stiff penalties for non-citizens caught returning after removal. His admission of guilt sealed his fate in a system that shows little tolerance for circumventing immigration law.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Suzanne Sullivan Jacobus of the Major Crimes Unit under the office of United States Attorney Andrew E. Lelling. The announcement of the sentence was jointly delivered by Lelling and Michael Shea, Acting Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations in Boston, underscoring the federal coordination behind immigration enforcement.
Perez-Fuentes now serves his sentence in the federal system while awaiting the next phase: formal deportation proceedings. His case reflects broader federal efforts to target repeat immigration offenders, treating illegal reentry not as a civil slip-up, but as a criminal act with consequences.
