Salvadoran National Sentenced for Reentry
BOSTON – A Salvadoran national was sentenced to prison for illegally reentering the United States after being deported. Wilfredo Carmona-Ponce, 38, was sentenced to 15 months in prison and two years of supervised release.
Carmona-Ponce was previously deported on March 19, 2014, but was encountered by law enforcement officers in Stoneham on March 23, 2016, who determined him to be illegally present in the United States.
Carmona-Ponce will be subject to deportation proceedings upon completion of his sentence.
United States Attorney Andrew E. Lelling and Rebecca Adducci, Interim Field Office Director, Boston, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations, made the announcement today.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Callahan of Lelling’s Criminal Division prosecuted the case.
Carmona-Ponce’s sentence is a stark reminder of the consequences of reentering the country illegally. The U.S. government takes these cases seriously and will continue to prosecute individuals who disregard our immigration laws.
The case against Carmona-Ponce is a prime example of the U.S. government’s commitment to enforcing our immigration laws and protecting our communities.
