Sammie Truman Williams, Heroin Distribution, Iowa 2022

A devastating blow to Iowa’s war on drugs came in the form of a 6-year prison sentence for a local man, accused of distributing heroin in the Cedar Rapids area. Sammie Truman Williams, age 37, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, received the prison term after an April 22, 2022 guilty plea to conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance.

Evidence at the plea and sentencing hearings showed that in 2017 and 2018, Williams and other individuals worked together to sell heroin in the Cedar Rapids area. Investigators conducted a wiretap investigation of a phone operated by Williams in January 2018. Multiple people called the phone to arrange heroin deals, with Williams setting up the arrangements and an accomplice delivering the heroin. In total, Williams was responsible for the distribution of over 100 grams of heroin.

Williams was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams. The court handed down a 77-month imprisonment sentence. He must also serve a 5-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.

Williams is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Ashley Corkery and Special Assistant United States Attorney Adam J. Vander Stoep and was investigated as part of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) program through a cooperative effort of the Drug Enforcement Administration Cedar Rapids Resident Office, the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, Cedar Rapids Police Department, and the Linn County Sheriff’s Office.
