In a shocking turn of events, a federal jury found Samuel Gonzalez, 34, of Luling, Texas, guilty of assaulting a fellow inmate at the U.S. Penitentiary in Pollock, Louisiana.
The gruesome attack took place on September 6, 2011, when Gonzalez, along with another inmate, repeatedly struck the victim with an edged weapon, resulting in nine lacerations to the upper torso and neck.
The victim, who miraculously survived the assault, was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Witness testimony and documents admitted into evidence at trial revealed the horrific details of the attack.
Gonzalez’s sentencing took place on Thursday, with U.S. District Judge Dee D. Drell handing down a 110-month prison sentence, to be followed by three years of supervised release. The Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Seth D. Reeg prosecuted the case.
The crime was a shocking betrayal of trust, and the severity of the sentence reflects the gravity of Gonzalez’s actions. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that exist within our prison system and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their crimes.
Gonzalez’s conviction is a testament to the tireless efforts of law enforcement agencies and prosecutors who work tirelessly to bring justice to victims of violent crimes. The Grimy Times will continue to monitor this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
