U.S. Attorney Stephanie A. Finley announced that Isaac Hashi was sentenced on Wednesday to 18 years in prison for stabbing a federal prison guard with a makeshift knife.

The crime occurred on November 4, 2009 while Hashi was incarcerated at the U.S. Penitentiary in Pollock, Louisiana. He pleaded guilty on November 16, 2012 to one count of assaulting a prison guard and possessing contraband, which was a four-inch makeshift plexiglass knife.

Hashi is serving a prison term at the Pollock Penitentiary for assault after throwing hot oil on a deportation official’s face on January 11, 2008 at the Columbia Care Center in South Carolina.

As part of his sentence, Hashi will be required to serve three years of supervised release after completing his 17-year sentence for the earlier assault charge.

U.S. Attorney Finley stated, “Federal prison guards play a vital role in our public safety efforts. Neither the FBI or our office takes lightly anyone who attempts to impede their work. We hope this sentence sends a strong message that assaulting a prison guard is a serious crime that has severe consequences.”

The FBI-Alexandria, Louisiana, Resident Agency conducted the investigation, and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert J. France prosecuted the case.
