SIOUX FALLS, SD – A brazen daylight robbery at a Sioux Falls gas station landed 24-year-old Samuel Oreoluwa Roberts a seven-year federal prison sentence. U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier delivered the verdict on September 11, 2023, after Roberts admitted to wielding a pistol during the commission of the crime.
According to court documents, Roberts walked into the Get-n-Go convenience store on March 29, 2022, and immediately brandished a handgun, demanding cash from terrified store employees. He made off with $245 before fleeing the scene. The robbery triggered a swift investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
A federal grand jury indicted Roberts in July of 2022 on charges of Interference with Commerce by Threats and Violence, alongside the more serious charge of Brandishing a Firearm During a Federal Crime of Violence. He ultimately pleaded guilty to both counts on July 3, 2023, facing the full weight of the law for his actions.
Beyond the seven-year prison term, Roberts will spend an additional three years under supervised release following his incarceration. Judge Schreier also ordered him to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund – a meager restitution for the fear and disruption he caused.
Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Ebert, who also serves as a prosecutor with the South Dakota Attorney General’s Office, successfully prosecuted the case. Ebert presented a compelling case built on evidence gathered by the ATF, demonstrating Roberts’ clear intent and the danger he posed to the public.
Roberts is currently in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service and has been transported to the Bureau of Prisons to begin serving his sentence. This case serves as a stark reminder that armed robbery carries severe consequences, and the ATF will relentlessly pursue those who threaten the safety of communities like Sioux Falls.
